Artist Derek Redican Presents Michael Collins
Portrait to the Irish Defence Forces
On Tuesday, 9th September 2025, Newbridge-based artist Derek Redican formally presented his portrait of Michael Collins to the Defence Forces and Department of Defence in Newbridge.
The painting was created as a personal tribute to Collins and has now become part of the Defence Forces’ collection. The handover ceremony was warm and respectful, and Derek was presented in return with a Defence Forces plaque
and other gifts.
An Cosantóir’s editor was present with a photographer to document the occasion, and the story will appear in the magazine. I am also sharing this with local and national media as it may be of wider interest.
Derek said at the handover:
“Michael Collins has always stood for courage, vision, and sacrifice —
qualities I admire and that I know still inspire the Defence Forces.
I created this painting with huge respect, and I’m really pleased to hand
it over into their care. It feels like the right home for it.”
Photos from the handover are available on request.
